Lupin seeds lower plasma lipid concentrations and normalize antioxidant parameters in rats

Abstract: 162in erythrocytes and plasma glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and catalase (CAT) were examined. A hypercholesterolemia-induced diet manifested in the elevation of total lipids (TL), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), LDL-C and MDA levels, ALT, AST, LDH activities and the depletion of GSH and enzymic antioxidants. The supplementation of a hypercholesterolemia-induced diet with bitter and sweet lupin seeds significantly lowered the plasma levels of TL, TC, TG and LDL-C. ALT, … Show more

“…In addition, in the group fed a diet involving raw lupine seeds, a significant decrease in total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol concentrations was found. Also other studies confirm hypocholesterolaemic advantages of lupine (Osman et al, 2011). The inhibition of cholesterol synthesis and cholesterol reduction in the blood could be affected by production of SCFA in digesta (Wong et al, 2006).…”

“…The high value of the h/H index indicates the presence of valuable lipids, with a real potential to reduce the plasma cholesterol [36,55]. These hypocholesterolemic properties of lupine seeds have been demonstrated for rats [56]. https://doi.org /10.37358/Rev.…”

“…Moreover, El-Malky and Gouda (2007) indicated that germinated lupin seeds reduced the increase of serum glucose, TC, TG, LDL-c, VLDL-c and enhanced the increase of HDL-c. As well, Osman, Mahmoud, Romeilah and Fayed (2011) observed the supplementation of a hypercholesterolemia-induced diet with sweet lupin seeds significantly lowered the plasma levels of TC, TG and LDL-C. ALT, AST and LDH activities slightly decreased in treated groups compared with the hypercholesterolemic group (positive control).…”
