Lung Perfusion Assessment by Bedside Electrical Impedance Tomography in Critically Ill Patients

Abstract: As a portable, radiation-free imaging modality, electrical impedance tomography (EIT) technology has shown promise in the bedside visual assessment of lung perfusion distribution in critically ill patients. The two main methods of EIT for assessing lung perfusion are the pulsatility and conductivity contrast (saline) bolus method. Increasing attention is being paid to the saline bolus EIT method in the evaluation of regional pulmonary perfusion in clinical practice. This study seeks to provide an overview of e… Show more

“…The change in impedance caused by the saline bolus reflects pulmonary arterial flow and is visualized. 4 A recently published prospective observational study demonstrated that using EIT to measure dead space percentage can accurately detect PE. This outperformed D-dimer with an area under the curve (AUC) measurement of 0.986 compared to D-dimer AUC of 0.502.…”

“…The technique has proven to be useful in ventilator parameter optimization ( Bachmann et al, 2018 ). Various studies have reported that EIT can be used for recruitment maneuvers (RM), positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) titration, lung volume estimation, and pulmonary perfusion ( Zhao et al, 2010 ; Ambrósio et al, 2021 ; Xu et al, 2021 ). Since EIT was first available commercially in Europe in 2011, clinical research and case reports have been successively conducted all over the world ( Shono and Kotani, 2019 ).…”
