Lung Function in Congenital Kyphosis and Kyphoscoliosis

Abstract: An increasing severity of kyphosis was associated with a significant increase in respiratory impairment (P<0.005). A more cranial level of the kyphosis, especially above T10, had a significantly greater effect on respiratory impairment (P<0.001). One untreated patient with a severe kyphosis (128 degrees) died from cor pulmonale.

“…It is mainly due to restriction which is related to the severity of scoliosis (Cobb's angle), the location of the curve, and the loss of normal thoracic kyphosis. [20] Severe degree of scoliosis affects the size and dimension of thoracic cage, and hence the pulmonary function. [21][22][23] There is severe reduction of the lung volume of patients with Cobb's angle more than 90°, and it is of restrictive type.…”

“…There is a general acceptance that an untreated congenital scoliosis can be potentially lethal in terms of TIS, neurological complications and there has been a reported death from cor pulmonale [10].…”
