Lung carcinoma trends by histologic type in Vaud and Neuchtel, Switzerland, 1974-1994

Abstract: States, incidence rates of squamous cell and small cell carcinoma have been showCarlo La Vecchia, M.D. 3 ing a decline in males, after peaks in 1981-82 and 1986-87, respectively incidence increased in both genders by approximately 2.5-fold; and during the period 1990-1994, in young adults of both genders, it was more than 3-fold higher than the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma. At variance with squamous cell carcinoma, the incidence of which reached its peaks in the 1910-20 birth cohorts in males and in th… Show more

“…These figures are relatively low compared with other studies. 13,15) There are two main reasons why histologic type could not be identified in the cancer registry. One is that lung cancer was diagnosed clinically or histologically, but histologic type could not be determined because no appropriate material for histologic diagnosis was available.…”

“…In the US and Europe, several hospital-based studies, [3][4][5][6] autopsy series 7) and population-based studies [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16] have examined the trends of lung cancer incidence by histologic type. In Asian countries there have been hospitalbased studies, [17][18][19][20] and a population-based study.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5][6] It is hypothesized that this trend is mainly due to the dissemination of low-tar filter cigarettes, 7-9 since filters mainly remove the larger particles in cigarette smoke, which tend to be deposited in the central large bronchus where most squamous cell carcinomas arise. However, such filters do not remove smaller particles, which tend to reach the peripheral region of the lung where adenocarcinomas arise.…”
