Lung Cancer Presenting as a Soft-Tissue Metastasis

Abstract: Soft-tissue metastasis refers to the growth of cancer cells, originating from internal cancer, in soft tissues. In most cases, soft-tissue metastases develop after initial diagnosis of the primary internal malignancy and late in the course of the disease. In very rare cases, they may occur at the same time or before the primary cancer has been detected. In our cases, the soft-tissue metastases and the primary lung cancer were diagnosed at the same time.

“…Metastases to the scapula are even more unlikely to occur as the first clinical presentation of disseminated malignant disease. So far, these cases have been described as part of advanced malignant lung disease as a result of expansion per continuitatem (11,12,13) , advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (14) , carcinoid tumors (15) , but also the cases of isolated metastasis to the scapula originated from colon cancer (16) , carcinoma of the lip (17) and bladder carcinoma (18) . In the case of our patients, metastases to the scapula occurred within advanced rectal and cervical cancer.…”

“…Lung cancer is most abundently encountered among men while among women it ranks fourth globally and also it is the leading cause of mortality worldwide [8]. Nearly 50% of the cases are metastatic at the primary diagnostic stage and approximately 60% of patients have microscopic or clinically evident metastasis during the primary tumor treatment [9][10][11]. Major metastatic sites include liver (33-40%), brain (15-43%), bone (19-33%), kidney (16-23%) and abdominal lymph nodes (29%) [10].…”

“…Soft tissue metastasis is uncommon (0.75–9%) 1. It is a sign of advanced disease and a grave prognostic factor 2. PET-CT scan is very helpful in making prompt diagnosis.…”
