Lung cancer in Israel, 1962?1982 I. Jews and Arabs

Abstract: The magnitude and dynamics of lung cancer incidence in Jews and Arabs in Israel between the years 1962 and 1982 were studied. In general, age-standardized incidence rates increased consistently between the years 1962 and 1976 among Jewish (24% increase) and Arab (39%) males, and to a lesser degree among Jewish females (15%). Arab females had the highest (77%) increase. From 1977 to 1982 a general decrease in incidence rates, which was largest among Arab males (19%) and females (15%), was noted. “…Jewish male populations across the world display low levels of smoking-related morbidity and mortality (Rennert et al 1988, 1990, Staetsky 2011 . In addition, we possess information on the low prevalence of other types of healthdestructive behaviour among Jews: low levels of alcohol consumption being the most remarkable example of this (Becher et al 2003;Glassner and Berg 1980;Shkolnikov et al 2004).…”

“…We examine findings on the mesothelioma to excess lung cancer ratio in this cohort and discuss possible interpretations. The findings are of interest in that baseline lung cancer incidence and mortality for males in Israel is less than one-half that of most European and North American countries [Rennert et al, 1988;Coleman et al, 1993;American Cancer Society, 1994;World Health Organization, 1996]. …”
