Lung cancer: developments, concepts, and specific aspects of the new WHO classification

Abstract: It becomes apparent that a three-step diagnostic concept based on morphology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular pathology is important to meet the requirements of an increasingly more complex, interdisciplinary care of lung cancer patients and to allow for reliable, clinically meaningful tumor diagnoses.

“…In this study, 60.0 % (9/15) EGFRmutated ASC patients demonstrated a response to EGFR TKIs, while in SCC and LCLC, the results were 30.8 % (8/26) and 30.0 % (3/10), respectively, which were similar to previous studies (Shukuya et al 2011). Some experts hold the view that some EGFR-mutated SCC and LCLC patients may also have a mixed adenocarcinoma histology and that the sensitivity of EGFR TKIs in those patients may depend on the proportion of EGFR-mutated adenocarcinoma components in the entire tumor (Ohtsuka et al 2007;Hata et al 2013;Petersen and Warth 2015). In this study, most patients were diagnosed based on a small diagnostic biopsy.…”

“…Based on its biological characteristics and clinical manifestations, lung cancer can be classified into small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) (3). Small-cell lung tumors undergo metastasis more rapidly than NSCLC to other organs, such as the brain, skeleton, and lymph tissues (4).…”

“…Zu Auswirkungen auf die Tumorklassifikation durch quasi entitätsdefinie-rende Immunmarker am Resektat sei auf eine kürzlich publizierte Übersichtsarbeit verwiesen [13]. Ein bislang in der Routinediagnostik bei NSCLC unzureichend genutzter immunhistochemischer Marker ist der Ki-67-Proliferationsindex.…”
