Lumpy skin disease: history, current understanding and research gaps in the context of recent geographic expansion

Ali Mazloum,
Antoinette Van Schalkwyk,
Shawn Babiuk
et al.

Abstract: Lumpy skin disease is recognized as a transboundary and emerging disease of cattle, buffaloes and other wild ruminants. Being initially restricted to Africa, and since 1989 the Middle East, the unprecedented recent spread across Eurasia demonstrates how underestimated and neglected this disease is. The initial identification of the causative agent of LSD as a poxvirus called LSD virus, was well as findings on LSDV transmission and epidemiology were pioneered at Onderstepoort, South Africa, from as early as the… Show more

“…With the recent emergence of recombinant vaccines, such as strains exhibiting transmission without arthropod activity ( 31 , 32 ), efforts have been made to determine the contribution of all forms. The studies led by Sprygin et al analyzed the biological features of recombinant strains, demonstrating that recombinant strains not only show altered properties on cell culture but also overwinter in northern latitudes ( 31 , 40 , 42 , 43 ).…”

“…One such viral disease of dairy animals attracted attention of several researchers due to its current epidemic in the Asian countries [3,32] . The LSD has recently become rampant and caused havoc in several northern states of the country [4,34] . The causative agent of this disease comes under family Poxviridae, sub-family Chordopoxvirinae and genus Capripox viruses with other related viruses namely, Sheep Pox and Goat Pox virus [5] .…”

“…The inactivated-strain Neethling vaccine shows variable efficacy across regions [16][17][18][19]. The recombinant vaccines for Kenya sheep-1(KS-1) protect against LSDV, whereas the LSD OBP vaccine shows severe post-vaccinal reactions [20,21]. Despite these efforts, there are no DIVA (differentiating infected from vaccinated animals) or subunit vaccines available for LSD [22].…”
