Lumpy skin disease: An emerging bovine viral infection in India

Abstract: Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is a highly infectious emerging viral disease of cattle and buffaloes in India. The main source of transmission of the disease is arthropods (mosquitoes, biting flies, Culicoides midges and three blood sucking hard ticks) which act as mechanical vector. Major clinical signs include skin nodules all over the body, fever, lacrimal discharge, nasal discharge, anorexia, decreased milk yield, emaciation, depression and reluctance in movement. Since the first report of lumpy skin disease in … Show more

“…Te disease was frst reported in the Iran and the Russian Federation in 2014 and 2015, respectively [25]. LSD cases were frst reported in China and India in 2019 [4,26]. Te disease was frst reported in Tailand in 2020; the virus isolated from the diseased animals had the same genotype as that reported in China (2019) and showed a similar homology to the virus isolated from Russia (2017) [1].…”

“…Recently, large outbreaks of lumpy skin disease (LSD) have been reported in previously disease-free areas such as Tailand [1], Nepal [2], Vietnam [3], and India [4]. Tese regions have witnessed a surge in the number of cases of this disease, and a new transboundary epidemic is emerging [5].…”

“…LSD follows an incubation period spanning from 4 days to 4 weeks and clinically, manifests in acute, subacute, and chronic forms, affecting cattle of all age groups and breeds [1]. However, among cattle, Bos taurus is more susceptible to the disease compared to Bos indicus and African water buffalo are clinically susceptible to LSD [14]. The clinical signs typically begin with a fever (40 • C to 41.5 • C), accompanied by increased oro-nasal, pharyngeal, and lachrymal secretions, swelling of superficial lymph nodes, loss of appetite, reduced milk production, and depression.…”

“…The infection then spreads to nearby lymph nodes, causing inflammation. The virus replicates in endothelial cells present in lymphatic and blood vessels, causing both regional and systemic reactions leading to vasculitis and lymphadenitis (Ahmed et al, 2020). While in severe conditions edema, necrosis, thrombosis and other symptoms may be observed which produces an epitheliotropic condition (Raja et al).…”
