Luminescent properties of Gd2SiO5powder doped with Eu3+under VUV–UV excitation

Abstract: The luminescent properties of Gd 2 SiO 5 powder crystals doped with Eu 3+ were investigated using synchrotron radiation and a VUV laser (157.6 nm) as excitation sources. The excitation spectra in the range of 160-330 nm monitoring the red emission from Eu 3+ ions reveal bands corresponding to intraconfigurational 4f-4f transitions of Gd 3+ and charge transfer states (CTS) of Eu 3+ -O 2− , as well as interband transitions of the Gd 2 SiO 5 host, indicating an efficient energy transfer process from the host or d… Show more

“…Different transitions occurring from the 5 D 1 emitting level are reported in the picture. We can underline that these emission spectra are quite different in shape to those recently obtain on powder [18]. At average size of 10 nm, it could be possible to observed size effect on the emission bands leading to for instance a broadening of the emission, a modification of the absorption features and a slight modification of the lifetime [19].…”

“…Later on, numerous papers were devoted to spectroscopic investigation of oxyorthosilicate crystals doped with various rare earth ions, e.g. Pr 3+ [3], Dy 3+ [4,5], Eu 3+ [6,7], Sm 3+ [8], or Tm 3+ [9]. When doped with ytterbium ions the LSO crystal proved to be a promising laser material emitting in near infrared [10,11].…”

“…In several papers, spectroscopic features of praseodymium-doped Y 2 SiO 5 crystals have been investigated aiming at assessment of their application as fast scintillators [10]. Also, phenomenon of quantum cutting in europium-doped Gd 2 SiO 5 has been examined to nd out whether this system may be promising as VUV-excited visible phosphor [11]. …”
