Fault scarps of strongly varying height cut glacial and alluvial sequences mantling the faulted front of the Teton Range (western USA). Scarp heights vary from 11.2 to 37.6 m and are systematically higher on geomorphically older landforms. Fault scarps cutting a deglacial surface, known from cosmogenic radionuclide exposure dating to immediately postdate 14.7 ± 1.1 ka, average 12.0 m in height, and yield an average postglacial offset rate of 0.82 ± 0.13 m/k.y. using simple scarp height (average 11.2 m, offset rate 0.76 ± 0.11 m/k.y. using vertical separation). We apply the offset rate to higher fault scarps to develop preliminary age estimates for the geomorphically older landforms, with an initial assumption of constant offset rate through time. The landform age estimates of 16.2 ± 3.9 ka to 45.9 ± 11.0 ka imply that glaciation and alluviation influenced the range front during marine isotope stages 2 and 3. However, fault offset rate variability, suggested by previous work to be attributable to Yellowstone ice cap deglacial processes, suggests that the fault scarp height pattern might also be interpreted as a reflection of strongly variable offset rates in landforms of only slightly contrasting age. These results demonstrate the need for detailed geochronology of isochronous landforms and sediments of multiple ages, in order to understand both faulting and glaciation on faulted range fronts.

The fluvial archive literature is dominated by research on river terraces with appropriate mention of adjacent environments such as lakes. Despite modern sedimentary basins comprising a significant (>88%) volume of distributive fluvial systems, of which alluvial fans (>1km, <30km in scale) are a significant part, interaction with these environments tends to be neglected and discussed in separate literature. This paper examines the dynamic role of alluvial fans within the fluvial landscape and their interaction with river systems, highlighting the potential value of alluvial fans to the wider fluvial archive community. Published literature is used to examine both thematic and geographical based benefits of alluvial fan research that can assist understanding of Quaternary fluvial archives. 3 regional case studies are presented that illustrate the interaction between alluvial fan and river terrace archives at Quaternary time-scales at 3 different stages of landscape evolution. These are i) continuous mountain front alluvial fans interacting with a non incising but laterally eroding axial fluvial system; ii) alluvial fans which transition into fluvial terraces as sedimentary basins shift from net aggradation to net incision and iii) tributaryjunction alluvial fans that develop predominantly within incising river valley systems. A simple conceptual model is proposed to summarise the dynamic role of alluvial fans within this landscape context. The alluvial fans act as potential 'buffers' between hillslopes and river terrace records under 'top down' climate-driven high sediment supply and alluvial fan aggradation, and 'couplers' during periods of less sediment (in relation to water) discharge and alluvial fan incision. These dynamics will change with the addition of 'bottom up' controls such as main river incision, which will typically enhance the coupling effect of both systems.

Fluvial planation surfaces, such as straths, commonly serve as recorders of climatic and tectonic changes and are formed by the lateral erosion of rivers, a process that remains poorly understood. Here we present a study of kilometer‐wide, fluvially eroded, low‐relief surfaces on rapidly uplifting folds in the foreland of the southwestern Tian Shan. A combination of field work, digital elevation model analysis, and dating of fluvial deposits reveals that despite an arid climate and rapid average rock‐uplift rates of 1–3 mm/yr, rivers cut extensive (>1–2 km wide) surfaces with typical height variations of <6 m over periods of >2–6 kyr. The extent of this “beveling” varies in space and time, such that different beveling episodes affect individual structures. Between times of planation, beveled surfaces are abandoned, incised, and deformed across the folds. In a challenge to models that link strath cutting and abandonment primarily to changes in river incision rates, we demonstrate that lateral erosion rates of antecedent streams crossing the folds have to vary by more than 1 order of magnitude to explain the creation of beveled platforms in the past and their incision at the present day. These variations do not appear to covary with climate variability and might be caused by relatively small (much less than an order of magnitude) changes in sediment or water fluxes. It remains uncertain in which settings variations in lateral bedrock erosion rates predominate over changes in vertical erosion rates. Therefore, when studying fluvial planation and strath terraces, variability of both lateral and vertical erosion rates should be considered.
