Lumbar Disc Herniation

Abstract: Purpose of Review Substantial advancements have been made in the cause, diagnosis, imaging, and treatment options available for patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH). We examined the current evidence and highlight the concepts on the frontline of discovery in LDH. Recent Findings There are a myriad of novel etiologies of LDH detailed in recent literature including inflammatory factors and infectious microbes. In the clinical setting, recent data focuses on improvements in computer tomography as a diagnost… Show more

“…On an annual basis 1% of the United States adult population will be afflicted by lumbar disc herniation, affecting an estimated 2.8 million people each year . Contemporary treatment options involve physical therapy, corticosteroid injection, and nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drug administration, which is able to alleviate symptoms for a large fraction of patients . Alternatively, herniated disc material can be excised to alleviate inflammation and potentially decompress neighboring nerves.…”

“…Bel ağrısının en sık nedenlerinden birisi lomber disk hernisidir. Lomber disk hernisi kalıcı fonksiyonel kayıplara ve iş gücü kaybına neden olan en önemli sağlık sorunlarından biridir (1,2). Lomber disk hernisi 30-50 yaş erkeklerde ve sıklıkla lomber 4-5 ya da lomber 5-sakral 1 vertebraları arasında görülür (3,4,5).…”

“…Disc herniation occurs mainly between the fourth and fifth decades of life (mean age of 37 years), although it has been described in all ages (4). Due to the large axial load to which it is exposed, the nucleus pulposus has a constant tendency to move and expand from the center of the disk to its periphery (5,6). Local displacement of the contents of the dicus beyond the boundary of the intervertebral space is defined as the discus hernia (5,6).…”
