“…Even though Luhmann built his theory of social systems mainly on serious semantics in contrast to everyday observation (see Joas and Knöbl [2009]; Stäheli [1997]), systems theory can also be approached differently, namely as a diagnostic of the present. From this perspective, it becomes possible to observe how present understandings of social identities (us/them) and temporalities (past/present/future) are framing communicative expectations (Andersen 2003(Andersen , 2013.
