Lucky to meet RS3PE

Abstract: We present a florid case of remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema that was actually a paraneoplastic syndrome of an asymptomatic undiagnosed adenosquamous lung cell carcinoma. The arthritis led to a screening for lung cancer and an early enough diagnosis for a curative intervention.

“…In our analysis, we found associations of RS3PE with certain malignancies such as lung cancer, adenocarcinoma of the prostate, myelodysplastic syndrome, adenosquamous lung carcinoma. [14][15][16][17][18] A thorough clinical investigation, a strong clinical suspicion and awareness associations of the musculoskeletal syndromes associated with tumor entities is of utmost importance in diagnosing paraneoplastic rheumatological diseases such as RS3PE. 28 Hence, clinicians should be actively aware of the association of malignancies and the selective influence of tumors on the musculoskeletal tissue through alteration of the periosteum, synovial membrane, subcutaneous connective tissue, fascia, muscles and bones.…”
