Luciobarbus lanigarensis and L. numidiensis, two new species of barbels from the Mediterranean Sea basin in North Africa (Teostei: Cyprinidae)

Abstract: Two new species of Luciobarbus are described from the Mediterranean Sea basin in Morocco and Algeria. Their monophyly and phylogenetic placement are resolved by molecular analyses using two mitochondrial markers (cyt b and D-loop). Luciobarbus lanigarensis, new species, from the Tafna River drainage in Algeria and Morocco, is distinguished by having orange fins, a great predorsal length (52–59% SL) and a very long pectoral fin (79–90% HL). Luciobarbus numidiensis, new species, from the El-Kébir River drainage … Show more

“…At each site (A, B, C and D), samples were collected, while taking into account the importance of fishing activities. Fish were identified using identification keys, and photographs (Hugueny et al, 2010;Brahimi et al, 2017;Brahimi et al, 2018). A total of 81 samples were caught between November 2017 and September 2019 (Table 1), using a fishing net known as Trémail.…”

“…This is probably due to the fact that the two species are genetically very close. In addition, the relationships, and affinities, within Luciobarbus species from the watersheds of African Mediterranean Sea remain uncertain (Brahimi et al, 2018).…”

“…With more than 900 nominal species, Dactylogyrus represents the largest helminth genus (Gibson, Timofeeva & Gerasev, 1996). Recent studies on northwest African cyprinids have shown that the biodiversity of this fish group is higher than previously estimated (e.g., Brahimi et al, 2018;Casal-López et al, 2015;. In Morocco, 20 species belonging to four genera (i.e., Carasobarbus Karaman, 1971;Labeobarbus Rüppel, 1835;Luciobarbus Heckel, 1843 andPterocapoeta Günther, 1902) are currently considered valid (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Van der Laan, 2020).…”

Among these, Luciobarbus is the most diverse, with 15 species, some being only recently described (Brahimi et al, 2018;Casal-López et al, 2015;. Descriptions of the new species may indicate that the diversity of their host-specific parasites, such as monogeneans of Dactylogyrus, is currently underestimated.…”

“…Recent molecular and taxonomic studies have further highlighted the richness of freshwater fish species diversity in the region leading to an improved understanding of their occurrence and distribution, albeit significant knowledge gaps remain (Geiger et al, 2014;Casal-Lopez et al, 2015;Doadrio et al, 2015Doadrio et al, , 2016aBrahimi et al 2016Brahimi et al , 2017Brahimi et al , 2018Touil et al, 2019).…”
