In subzero conditions, atmospheric ice naturally accretes on surfaces in outdoor environments. This accretion can compromise the operational performance of several industrial applications, such as wind turbines, power lines, aviation, and maritime transport. To effectively prevent icing problems, the development of durable icephobic coating solutions is strongly needed. Here, the durability of lubricated icephobic coatings was studied under repeated icing/deicing cycles. Lubricated coatings were produced in one-step by flame spraying with hybrid feedstock injection. The coating icephobicity was investigated by accreting ice from supercooled microdroplets using an icing wind tunnel. The ice adhesion strength was evaluated by a centrifugal ice adhesion tester. The icing performance was investigated over four icing/deicing cycles. Surface properties of coatings, such as morphology, topography, chemical composition and wettability, were analyzed before and after the cycles. The results showed an increase in ice adhesion over the cycles, while a stable icephobic behaviour was retained for one selected coating. Moreover, consecutive ice detachment caused a surface roughness increase. This promotes the formation of mechanical interlocking with ice, thus justifying the increased ice adhesion. Finally, the coating hydrophobicity mainly decreased as a consequence of the damaged surface topography. In summary, lubricated coatings retained a good icephobic level after the cycles, thus demonstrating their potential for icephobic applications.

Ice accretion is an unavoidable phenomenon that endangers the performance of outdoor infrastructure and vehicles at low temperatures. To combat ice accretion, the use of anti‐icing coatings has been one of the most appealing approaches because of their simplicity. Silicone elastomers have been increasingly employed due to their natural hydrophobicity, simple preparation, and low price. However, most of the characterization of silicone‐based polymers and other anti‐icing coatings has been done using unproven techniques that often do not directly relate to materials’ properties. In this work, the adhesion between glass and ice and four PDMS‐based elastomers has been studied by a combination of a macroscale shear test, a microscale technique (the Johnson–Kendall–Roberts (JKR) approach), and a commonly used push‐off test. Results are obtained at different temperatures and, importantly, different test velocities. The shear tests yield an energy release rate (the material's property related to adhesion) in the range of 1–10 J m−2, whereas the quasistatic JKR test yields values in the 0.1–0.5 J m−2 range for glass/PDMS interfaces. Ice/PDMS interfaces are found to have larger energy release rates in shear tests and lower values in quasistatic JKR tests. Both differences can be attributed to differences in interfacial crack dynamics.

Advancements in the synthesis of sulfur‐rich materials are driving progress across diverse fields owing to the rich and tunable functionalities of those materials. These materials are typically valued for their electrochemical behaviors, high refractive indices, heavy metal affinity, and ability to form dynamic covalent bonding. As a result, their applications span various industries including electronics, catalysis, lithium‐sulfur batteries, water reclamation, and optoelectronics. Moreover, elemental sulfur, a byproduct of the petroleum industry, is produced abundantly, necessitating the exploration of novel valorization routes for polymers made from this feedstock. The unique combination of properties of sulfur‐rich polymers also makes them an ideal platform for the development of high‐performance functional coatings, offering durability and tailored functionalities for protective coatings, thus enhancing materials lifespan and performances in a variety of environmental conditions. The presence of dynamic covalent bonds in many sulfur‐rich polymers enables the creation of self‐healing coatings, while sulfur itself or the comonomers can contribute to antimicrobial, antifouling, and corrosion‐resistant properties. Furthermore, sulfur‐rich polymers have the potential to be used in the design of icephobic and superhydrophobic coatings. This underscores the versatility of sulfur‐rich polymers as a platform for the creation of advanced coatings with superior properties.
