<title>Polyimides: new properties of xerographic, thermoplastic, and liquid-crystal structures</title>

Abstract: Sensitization of various structured polyimides in the wavelength range 400-750 nm has been studied. Injection sensitization with thin films of nanocrystal CdSe, structural-chemical sensitization with active acceptors (flullerenes), as well as spectral sensitization with various dyes have been investigated. It has been concluded that the application of polyimides as a photosensitive medium allows characteristics ofnumerous devices to be improved.

“…The C60 and C70 molecules are spherical or rugby-ball in shape, respectively. On exciting, triphenylamine molecule experiences a conformational transformation, changing from the neutral tetrahedral form to the ionized planar one [18]. This effect along with less dimensions of the triphenylamine molecule (0.5 urn) than those of the fullerene molecule (0.7-0.8 nm) allow the arrangement of their molecular planes to be expected in parallel.…”

“…From the previous results [14, 1 5 ,1 8] one can say that fullerenes provOke the creation of reverse saturable absorption materials based on polyimide with the high absorption cross section. The absorption cross section of donor-acceptor complex of fullerene with donor polyimide 6B fragment (triphenylamine) was recently estimated in the paper [18]. It is really about 300 times more than the one of intramolecular polyimide complexes.…”

“…Moreover, in these papers, the increase in photoconductivity has been observed on fullerene doping and the dependence of the optical limiting level has been obtained on the fullerene concentration. For this system, the absorption cross section for the complex with intermolecular charge transfer between the donor fragment (triphenylamine, TPA) of the polyimide molecule and fullerene as a strong intermolecular acceptor has been determined [47]. A very large absorption cross section  for molecules based on the D-A complex of fullerene with TPA follows from the drastic increase in absorption at the low fullerene concentration.…”

“…The rotation threshold is 100-700 kcal×mol -1 [12]. This effect is likely to result in a better arrangement of PI donor fragment (triphenylamine) and fullerene planes, and hence in efficient CT between them [13].…”
