<title>Multicomponent compression in JPEG 2000 Part II</title>

Abstract: JPEG2000 Part I provides a host of compression options and data ordering choices which enable powerful applications and create tremendous flexibility in the handling of still images. Part I, however, is restricted to handle multiple component images (with the exception of three-component images) a single component at a time. In general, Part I allows no exploitation of inter-component correlation that may exist. Part II introduces a robust multiple component transform capability which is applied prior to the P… Show more

“…components in JPEG 2000) and component bitdepths in excess of 32 bits. Furthermore, JPEG 2000 offers lossy and lossless decorrelation and prediction techniques that may be used across components [11]. JPEG 2000 can easily provide resolution levels that support changes in scale up to 16,384X (seven resolution levels) and higher.…”

“…After the stabilization process is complete the motion left can be attributed to objects moving in the scene and a minor amount of background motion due to parallax of tall objects. JPEG 2000 Part 2 [5] provides a number of predictive and transform based compression techniques that may be applied prior to application of the two dimensional JPEG 2000 algorithm [11]. Furthermore, JPEG 2000 Part 2 provides mechanisms that allow components to be grouped together and a specific transform or prediction applied across the group.…”

“…Additionally, methods are given that allow any of the above transform types to be implemented in a lossless fashion. 11 Component collections can be used to spectrally segment and match a component transform to a given spectral region. For example, we can provide a unique transform for visible, near IR, mid-wave IR, and long-wave IR.…”

“…In this paper, we will discuss issues from both the encoder's and decoder's perspective, being careful to make clear what point of view we have adopted. Section 2 of this paper reviews the MCT framework; this discussion will not be an in-depth examination of the framework, readers are encouraged to consult other sources, 7,11 for an indepth review. Section 3 will review the JPEG 2000 and JPIP standards and how they enable interacting with large digital imagery datasets.…”
