<title>Militarized, laser-welded optoelectronic device packaging</title>

Abstract

A combination of laser welding and gradient index (GRIN) lenses has been used to package commercial lasers, ELEDs and detectors for wide temperature range military environments.Both pigtailed single mode fiber packages and SMA connectorized multimode fiber packages have been developed which have high and stable coupling efficiency from -55 to 125°C.For example, a typical single mode laser package has a coupling efficiency o 40% with a variation over this temperature range. A multimode laser package has a typical coupling efficiency of 70% into 1O0jm graded index fiber with a variation over temperature. Room temperature coupling efficiency into 50/nu graded index fiber averaged 48% with a standard deviation of 2.36% for 140 devices sampled. Packages have been built for both 9mm and 5.6mm diameter commercial devices in configurations suited to circuit card or bulkhead mounting.
