SUMMARYActive buffer management can improve the performance of Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol-based networks. Random early detection (RED), an active queue management scheme, has been proposed by the Internet Engineering Task Force for next-generation Internet routers. RED uses a number of parameters, such as buffer thresholds, a packet drop probability and a weight parameter. RED suffers from low throughput and large delay/jitter and induces instability in networks. Previous attempts to improve the performance of RED were based on modifying the thresholds and drop probabilities. In this paper, we show that an optimal value of the weight parameter can improve the performance of RED, and then develop a framework to determine the optimal value of the weight parameter. We show that the optimal weight parameter obtained from our framework improves the performance of RED.

Internet over the past few years has undergone dramatic changes in terms of scale, penetration rate and the diversity of applications. The demand for continuous network connectivity is profilerating. Moreover, it has been observed that the usage of real time applications like Voice over IP (VoIP) and Live Streaming has increased drastically. Passive Queue Management (PQM) mechanisms in the routers do not react to congestion till the buffers overflow. This has two severe consequences: (i) large queueing delays that hurt the performance of real time traffic because such traffic is sensitive to delay and (ii) a large number of consecutive packet drops which affect the network stability. Recently, there has been a lot of interest in the deployment of Active Queue Management (AQM) mechanisms in modern Internet routers to overcome drawbacks of buffer overflow. Although Random Early Detection (RED) is the most widely studied AQM mechanism, it is highly sensitive to parameter settings. In this paper, we propose a robust AQM mechanism named Adaptive Nonlinear RED (ANLRED) which minimizes the parameter sensitivity of RED. Results obtained using ns-2 in a wide variety of Internet scenarios show that ANLRED improves the overall performance of the network in terms of link utilization while maintaining an acceptable mean queue length and minimal packet drop rate. Abstract-We consider the problem of designing systems for the transmission of video signals of the quality found in current television broadcasts, over high-speed segments of the public IP network. Our most important contribution is the definition of a network/coder interface for IP networks which gathers channel state information, and then sets parameters of the video coder to maximize the quality of the signal delivered to the receiver, while remaining fair to other data or video connections. This interface plays a role analogous to that of a Leaky Bucket controller, in that it specifies traffic shaping parameters which result in simultaneous good Quality-of-Service (QoS) for the source and good network performance. Since the network is not assumed to provide any form of QoS guarantee, fundamental to our construction is a hidden Markov model for the channel, based on which the interface solves a problem of optimal stochastic control, to decide how to configure the encoder. Other contributions are a) modifications to the standard Internet transport protocol, to make it suitable for the transport of delay-constrained traffic and to gather channel state information, and b) the design of an error-resilient video coder. Experimental studies reveal that the proposed system is able to stream video signals of the quality of current TV-broadcasts, among hosts in wide-area networks connected to the experimental vBNS backbone.
