Some taxonomic and nomenclatural changes in American Mantodea (Insecta, Dictyoptera)—Part I

Abstract: Multiple nomenclatural problems persist in mantodean taxonomy. This constitutes an important challenge for praying mantis systematics, its forthcoming development and future consolidation. In this first contribution, we attempt solving a number of issues involving mostly Neotropical praying mantis species described by Brazilian entomologists Paulo S. Terra, Cândido F. de Mello-Leitão, Salvador de Toledo Piza Junior and Lauro J. Jantsch. We provide evidence to justify the following nomenclatural changes. In Aca… Show more

“…P) and Photiomantinae (not shown, but comparable to Fig. O, P; see also Agudelo & Rivera, : 348) all exhibit a less‐specialized lateral process on the right margin of the ventral phallomere, where this appears to be a continuation of the phallomere itself in terms of both its level of differentiation and sclerotization. This contrasts with the condition observed in Photinainae, where the same structure is clearly differentiated, showing higher structural variability and various degrees of sclerotization and specialization (Fig.…”

“…We included undescribed, yet relevant, taxa among our study material; these are labelled as such in the phylogeny and Appendix S1. For taxonomic identification we used the available literature on Neotropical Mantodea listed in Rivera (), in addition to more recently published contributions (Rivera et al , ; Roy & Stiewe, ; Lombardo et al , ; Menezes & Bravo, ; Agudelo, ; Agudelo & Rafael, ; Rivera, ; Scherrer, ; Svenson, ; Agudelo & Rivera, ; François & Roy, ; Roy, ). We studied type specimens when literature‐based identification was inconclusive.…”

“…At present, praying mantis species are most frequently delimited through observable differences in external morphological and genitalic features (e.g., Svenson 2014, Agudelo and Rafael 2014, Agudelo and Rivera 2015, Svenson et al 2015, Rivera and Svenson 2016, Brannoch and Svenson 2016a, b, Svenson et al 2016, Rodrigues and Cancello 2016, etc.). The reliance on genitalia to make taxic determinations necessitates a morphological investigation of both the male and female genitalia as well as the pre- and post-genital segmentation of the abdomen (see Suppl.…”
