The Serum Concentration of Anti-Aging Proteins, Sirtuin1 and αKlotho in Patients with End-Stage Kidney Disease on Maintenance Hemodialysis

Abstract: Introduction: Sirtuin1 (SIRT1) acts as an anti-aging protein due to anti-apoptotic, antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effect and is implicated in several diseases including diabetes or cardiovascular problems. SIRT1 renal overexpression indicates oxidative stress. Similarly, αKlotho was primarily exposed as anti-aging factor. It is primary produced in kidney. It's deficiency is associated with progression of chronic kidney disease and heart disorders. Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess the serum con… Show more

“… 14 On the contrary, substantially elevated sirtuin 1 concentration was found in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis. 15 These findings support the notion that sirtuin 1 may be influenced to greater extent by diabetes-related factors if only mild or moderate renal impairment is present. In line with this idea, in our study, we demonstrated raised serum sirtuin concentration in patients with CKD compared with healthy subjects.…”

“…Based on the available literature we found two studies investigating serum sirtuin 1 in diabetic kidney disease and one in maintenance dialysis patients. [13][14][15] Regarding diabetic kidney disease the authors of both studies showed significantly lower sirtuin 1 concentration in patients compared with healthy controls. 13,14 However, findings on the relationship between the sirtuin concentration and the degree of albuminuria revealed discrepancies.…”

“…This assay is an established in vitro model of PE and allows us to study the effect of circulating factors released from the placenta on endothelial cells [14,15]. Although circulating SIRT1 has been reported in other diseases [16][17][18][19], this data is missing in PE.…”
