The Relationship Between Fasting Blood Glucose Levels and First Ischemic Stroke in Elderly Hypertensive Patients

Abstract: The relationship between fasting blood glucose and first ischemic stroke in older adults was unclear, so we explored this association among older patients with hypertension in China. Methods: We recruited hypertensive participants with 60 or more of age. Fasting blood glucose concentrations were categorized into quartiles. Hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for ischemic stroke were estimated using multivariate Cox regression analysis and subgroup analysis. Results: A total of 3310 (1474 (44.53%… Show more

“…Elevated HbA1C levels have been shown to increase the risk of a significant first-time stroke and the development of a larger infarct. 14,15 Furthermore, in contrast to patients who do not encounter early neurological deterioration, those who do experience this deterioration exhibit a more pronounced standard deviation and average fluctuation range in their blood glucose levels. 16 Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that an extended period of elevated hyperglycemia is associated with magnified infarct dimensions, heightened susceptibility to reperfusion complications, deterioration of stroke-related lesions, and potentially elevated mortality rates.…”

“…Endpoints were acquired through personal interview, records from medical insurance, and hospital discharge summaries. According to former investigations, the principal endpoint was to be determined as the first IS, including cerebral infarction and transient ischemic attack [ 28 , 29 ]. The diagnosis of IS was on the basis of a contract vascular computed tomography (CT) scan or cranial CT scan, cerebrovascular angiography, or magnetic resonance imaging of the brain.…”

“…2 Furthermore, high FBG is an independent risk factor for a first IS in older individuals with hypertension. 3 In addition, high triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations are risk factors for IS. 4 FBG has also been reported to be significantly associated with the prognosis of IS.…”
