The Neutrophil to Lymphocyte and Lymphocyte to Monocyte Ratios as New Prognostic Factors in Hematological Malignancies – A Narrative Review

Abstract: Despite the presence of many hematological prognostic indexes, clinical course and overall survival are often highly variable even within the same patient subgroup. Recent studies suggest that simple, cost-effective, low-risk tests such as neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR) may be used to evaluate the prognosis. Their role has been well confirmed in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and multiple myeloma (MM), but until now the prognostic signi… Show more

“…This ratio has been reported as an independent prognostic factor and a value <=1.2 at the diagnosis is associated with shorter time to progression and survival in dogs with DLBCL treated with chemoimmunotherapy ( 32 ). Similar cutoff (1.43) and results were obtained using a lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio calculated from hematology reports in another study ( 18 ), as also described in human medicine ( 33 , 34 ).…”

“…Moreover, neutrophils are involved in the immune response, as an important part of the tumor microenvironment, which plays a central role in cHL pathogenesis [11][12][13]. Neutrophil counts and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) have been proposed as prognostic factors in several solid and hematological tumors, including adults with cHL [14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. A recent study demonstrated that NLR could predict clinical outcomes in PET-negative adult patients with cHL [21].…”

“…The poor diagnostic utility of the total WCC in ICU patients is a consistent finding [ 19 ]. This is unsurprising given the wide variety of non-infectious mimics, drugs, and comorbidities that influence the total WCC [ 20 24 ]. Further, the total WCC may decrease acutely due to sequestration of granulocytes at the site of infection, with a delay in the release of neutrophils from the bone marrow [ 25 ].…”
