Unraveling a 150 years old controversy: Calamoichthys Smith, 1866 is the valid name for the African Reedfish (Cladistii: Polypteriformes), with comments about the availability of involuntarily proposed zoological names

Abstract: We readdress the controversy about the valid generic name to be applied to the African Reedfish, a species from a monotypic genus that, along with the eleven valid species of Polypterus Lacepède, 1803, comprises the known extant diversity of the order Polypteriformes. The initial conflict was established due to the inadequate replacement of the name Erpetoichthys, wrongly assumed preoccupied, by Calamoichthys, combined with the desynchronization between the sequence in which Smith’s accounts with descriptions … Show more

“…Polypteridae (Cladistii: Polypteriformes) is a group of freshwater and brackish water fishes that includes 14 valid species (Eschmeyer et al, 2019; Moritz and Britz, 2019) in two genera, Calamoichthys Smith 1866 (the name Erpetoichthys Smith 1866, commonly used in recent years, is a junior synonym of Calamoichthys , see Rizzato and Bockmann, 2017) and Polypterus La Cepède 1803. Calamoichthys is monotypic, represented only by the African Reedfish, Calamoichthys calabaricus Smith 1866, whereas Polypterus includes 13 extant species (Eschmeyer et al, 2019; Moritz and Britz, 2019).…”

“…Extant polypteriforms are represented by the unique African family, Polypteridae ( Daget, 1949 ; Daget, 1950 ; Daget, 1958 ; Daget, 1986 ; Greenwood, 1984 ; Daget & Desoutter, 1983 ). The polypterids form a monophyletic assemblage of two nominal genera: Polypterus Lacépède, 1803 , the bichirs, with about 13 species and the monospecific Calamoichthys Smith, 1866 , the reed fish (= Erpetoichthys ; for the taxonomic discussion see Rizzato & Bockmann, 2017 ).…”
