The Neotropical species of Xanthopimpla Saussure (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Pimplinae)

Abstract: Xanthopimpla Saussure, 1892 is one of the largest and best studied genera of the family Ichneumonidae. It is most species rich in the Oriental and Afrotropical regions with only a few species occurring in Central and South America. The present study reviews the Neotropical species of the genus including descriptions of four new species from Amazonia and Northeast South America. We define a new species group: the amazonica species-group, to accommodate the following five species: X. amazonica Gómez, Sääksjärvi … Show more

“…In this study, we compare observations of local species richness of pimplines and rhyssines across latitudes on the basis of field sampling we carried out in 21 sites on three continents. The two most intensively studied areas were in Peruvian Amazonia, where the sampled localities were selected so as to span different forest types (Sääksjärvi et al ., ; Gómez et al ., , ). Most sampling was done with Malaise traps, but in the two Peruvian areas, we also used other sampling methods for comparison.…”

“…Recent studies show that the ichneumonid fauna of South America still contains many undescribed species (e.g., Palacio et al 2010, Valera & Días 2010, Veijalainen et al 2012, Gómez et al 2014, Gómez & Yabar-Landa 2015, Pádua et al 2015, Sääksjärvi et al 2015, Bordera et al 2016.…”

“…Xanthopimpla species can be recognized by yellow body with stout legs and variables spots or black bands on abdominal tergites .Bidentate mandibles and lower teeth twisted are two characters which differentiate this genus from others (Gauld, 1984). A lot of faunal studies of this genus from different regions of the world include Thunberg (1822); Saussure (1892) and Krieger (1914) from Palearctic region; Tosquinet (1896) and Seyrig (1932) from Afrotropical region; Townes 1969 andGómez et al (2009;2014) from Neotropical regions and Townes & Chiu (1970), Gupta (1987), Pham et al (2011) from oriental regions etc.…”
