“…There are over 200 names of validly published taxa still in use, including several species described in the last decade (Buck, 1993) based on the BRYOTROP collections from Rwanda and Zaire. Recent revisions for some of the smaller genera (O'Shea, 1997(O'Shea, , 1998(O'Shea, , 2000(O'Shea, , 2006, and work continuing on other genera, show a consistent reduction in the number of accepted species. This tendency is confirmed by the preliminary study of this family on the basis of 338 collections from Mt Mulanje, Malawi (Longton, 1993).…”

“…This is evident in the discovery of Asiatic taxa on a few offshore islands (O'Shea, 1997(O'Shea, , 2000 and on the African mainland itself: work on the Uganda flora (Porley et al, 1999) has also identified the presence in Africa of the Asian Papillidiopsis complanata (Dixon) W.R.Buck & B.C.Tan. Only the small genus Donnellia, not recorded from Malawi, is known from America and Africa, but not from Asia.…”

<p><strong>A review of <em>Gammiella</em> Broth. in Africa, with a range extension to the East African islands and southern Africa</strong></p>

“…Tixier (1977) included this taxon in the synonymy of Gammiella merrillii (Broth.) Tixier (now a synonym of G. ceylonensis), but as a number of the taxonomic descriptions and judgements in his paper have been shown to be suspect (see, O´Shea for example, Tan & Buck 1989;O'Shea 2000;O'Shea & Buck 2001; this paper, Excluded taxon), and the paper contains a large number of mistakes in the quotations of type specimens and synonymy, this was not applied to the African checklist (O'Shea 1999) pending further analysis. Tan and Buck (1989) in their consideration of Philippine taxa reviewed Tixier's (1977) observations on Gammiella, and rejected many of the decisions he had made, and in turn proposed new synonymy, which is followed here.…”
