Peliosanthes crassicoronata (Asparagaceae), a new species from southern Vietnam

Abstract: Peliosanthes crassicoronata is described and illustrated as a new species from southern Vietnam. It somewhat resembles P. macrostegia in having drooping bowl-shaped purplish flowers, but is readily distinguishable by the larger leaves with more numerous longitudinal veins, internally thickly ribbed staminal corona, and pistil with a hexagonal ovary and an indistinct style. The phylogenetic relationship of the new species was inferred from an analysis of chloroplast and nuclear DNA sequences.

“…Presently more than half of the known Peliosanthes species are reported from eastern Indochina, including Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam (Tanaka , , b, Averyanov and Tanaka , , Averyanov et al , , , b, , b, , Vislobokov , Nguyen et al , Vislobokov et al ), suggesting that eastern Indochina is a hotspot for the diversity and diversification of the genus. Since reports of new entities are still continuing (Averyanov et al , Nguyen et al ), it is highly probable that many more undescribed taxa of this genus inhabit that region and will be discovered when more extensive field surveys are carried out. In fact, we encountered one additional novelty of Peliosanthes while we were botanizing in the central part of Laos in May 2018.…”

“…The corona is fleshy and often incurved, forming a hemispheric dome‐shaped structure as seen in such species as P. aperta Aver., N.Tanaka & Vuong (Averyanov et al : 26) and P. crassicoronata K.S.Nguyen, Aver. & N.Tanaka (Nguyen et al : 41). In some species, such as P. violacea Wallich ex Baker (: 504), P. campanulata (Baillon : 743) Rodriguez (: 96) and P. hexagona Aver., N.Tanaka & K.S.Nguyen (Averyanov et al : 38), the corona is more strongly inflexed and nearly flat.…”

“…These three genera are widely distributed over the temperate to tropical regions of south, southeast and east Asia (Jessop 1976, Tanaka 2001). The number of known species of this group, especially of Peliosanthes , has been rapidly increasing during the past decades (Fang 1998, Tanaka 1999, 2018, Averyanov and Tanaka 2012, Averyanov et al 2015, 2016, 2020, Vislobokov 2016, Nguyen et al 2017b, 2020, Nong et al 2019, Borah et al 2020, Odyuo et al 2020, Roy et al 2020, Tanaka and Kalyuzhny 2020, Taram et al 2020, Vislobokov et al 2020). A similar situation is found in Aspidistra Ker Gawler (1822: 628), another Asian member of Ophiopogoneae, or Nolinoideae (Lang et al 1999, Bogner and Arnautov 2004, Tillich 2005, 2014, Averyanov and Tillich 2014, Vislobokov et al 2014, Nguyen et al 2017a, Tanaka 2017).…”
