Neottia nyinyikyawii (Orchidaceae: Epidendroideae), a new species from Chin State, Myanmar

Abstract: Neottia nyinyikyawii, a new species of Orchidaceae, is described and illustrated from Nat Ma Taung, Chin State, Myanmar. Neottia nyinyikyawii is morphologically similar to N. chandrae and N. tenuis, but differs from them by having leaves borne in the middle of the plant, elliptic lip 7.0–8.0 × 1.5–2.0 mm and falcate lobelets. A preliminary assessment of the risk of extinction of this new species is Least Concern (LC).

“…We collected specimens of five previously unidentified species during our field surveys in Yunnan and Tibet from 2016–2023. Following a review of the literature (see Pearce and Cribb 2002 ; Chen et al 2009 ; Raskoti 2009 ; Jin and Pang 2016 ; Averyanov et al 2018 ; Wu et al 2019 ; Mu et al 2020 ; Liao et al 2022 ), morphological studies of herbarium specimens and plastid phylogenomic analyses, we concluded that these specimens are new to the genera Neottia ( Orchidaceae : Epidendroideae , Neottieae ), Papilionanthe and Gastrochilus ( Orchidaceae : Epidendroideae , Vandeae, Aeridinae ) respectively. These species are analyzed and described below.…”

“…Neottia Guettard consists of small terrestrial orchids and includes both autotrophic and mycoheterotrophic species. There are approximately 60 species in Neottia widely distributed in northern temperate regions, with a few species extending into alpine areas of Asian subtropical regions ( Chen, 1981 , 1999 ; Dressler, 1981 ; Pearce and Cribb, 2002 ; Pridgeon et al., 2005 ; Chen et al., 2009 ; Raskoti et al., 2012 ; Jin, 2014 ; Jin and Pang, 2016 ; Zhou and Jin, 2018 ; Govaerts et al., 2019 ; Mu et al., 2020 ). Morphologically, Neottia is characterized by resupinate flowers, a more or less curved column, retrorse-inclined anthers, and sectile and naked pollinia.…”
