A new species of Androlepis (Bromelioideae; Bromeliaceae), endemic from southern Megamexico

Abstract: Androlepis najarroi (Bromelioideae, Bromeliaceae), a third dioecious species identified in the subfamily, is proposed as new from the Chiapas Highlands and Veracruzan biogeographical provinces, southern Megamexico. The novelty is superficially similar to Aechmea lueddemanniana but features characteristics of Androlepis, such as unisexual flowers and apically divided filaments. Based upon available information on the species and current generic concepts, assigning this species to Androlepis might only be provis… Show more

“…This genetically very well‐defined clade has also been found in previous studies with relevant sampling and resolution (Schulte & al., 2005; Horres & al., 2007; Schulte & Zizka, 2008; Schulte & al., 2009; Sass & Specht, 2010; Silvestro & al., 2014; Díaz, 2019). From the morphological point of view, the members of this clade are strikingly different (Ramirez‐Diaz & al., 2020). However, the consistent results of molecular phylogenetic studies very much contradict the current taxonomy.…”

“…pacifica (three sampled individuals) possessed reciprocal monophylly, being each taxa recovered as monophyletic with respect to each other (Kizirian & Donnelly 2004); however, according to cpDNA evidence, A. bracteata var. pacifica seems to be more related to A. pittieri and A. pubescens (Ramírez-Díaz 2019), but this relationship is not well supported since the topology shows low resolution.…”

“…Later, Ramírez-Díaz (2019) performed a phylogenetic analysis in order to assess the phylogenetic position of Mexican and Central American distributed Bromelioids. This work included a phylogenetic analysis with the same markers used by Sass & Specht (2010) but with a higher number of species (210 spp.…”
