Loss of Cirbp expression is correlated with the malignant progression and poor prognosis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Abstract: Purpose: The correlation of cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (Cirbp) expression with clinicopathological features including patient prognosis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) was investigated. Methods: The expression of Cirbp in NPC cell lines and tissue specimens was examined by qRT-PCR or immunohistochemistry (IHC). Results: Immunohistochemistry (IHC) results showed that high Cirbp expression was detected in 61 of 61 non-cancerous nasopharyngeal s… Show more

“…The role of CIRBP in tumorigenesis remains controversial. In some cases, it has an oncogenic function (16), while in other studies, it acts as a tumor suppressor (17). According to our results, besides canonical alternative splicing, CIRBP has a splicing-independent low accuracy mechanism of mRNA diversity generation.…”

“…CIRBP , which has previously been found at the telomeres of a telomerase-positive cell line [ 110 ], was downregulated in stage IV disease and associated with a favourable prognosis. Previous studies have also linked loss of CIRBP expression with malignant progression of nasopharyngeal carcinoma [ 232 ]. RPS6KA1 , WFS1 , ANAPC4 and TUBB4A have not been investigated in EC prior to this, and further studies are indicated to elucidate how these genes may affect survival in cancer in general, as well as their role in EC.…”

“…CIRBP, cold-inducible RNA-binding protein, belonging to the cold-shock protein family, is expressed in different cell types and was involved in various cancer pathological processes, including cell survival, cell proliferation, and cancer ( Zhu et al, 2016 ; Su et al, 2020 ). It was reported that CIRBP had different effects in various cancers according to the cell context such as acting as a tumor suppressor in rectal carcinoma, endometrial carcinoma, and ovarian tumor and having pro-tumorigenic influences on melanoma, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, central-nervous-system-related tumor, liver-pancreas carcinomas, skin squamous cell carcinoma, bladder cancer, and pituitary corticotrope adenoma ( Zhu et al, 2016 ; Liao et al, 2017 ; Zhong and Huang, 2017 ; Chen et al, 2018 ; Colasanti et al, 2018 ; Lujan et al, 2018 ; Lin et al, 2019 ). Some studies found down-expressed CIRBP to be always related with poor-survival cell-cycle process and disease stage in BRCA patients ( Joe and Nam, 2016 ; Rodrigues-Peres et al, 2019 ).…”
