Film-Forming Sprays for Topical Drug Delivery

Abstract: Film-forming sprays offer many advantages compared to conventional topical preparations because they can provide uniform drug distribution and dose, increased bioavailability, lower incidence of irritation, continuous drug release, and accelerated wound healing through moisture control. Film-forming sprays consist of polymers and excipients that improve the characteristics of preparations and enhance the stability of active substances. Each type of polymer and excipient will produce films with different featur… Show more

“…The film formula has the advantage of being easily soluble, more stable, and durable, but it is fragile and hygroscopic; thus, it must be stored in a dry place and requiring special packaging for product stability [37]. The spray formula has the advantage of having a large coverage area and the dosage was adjustable based on the needs, while the disadvantage was lack of stability [38]. The mucoadhesive in this review consist of: HPMC, HPEC, Benzocaine, tragacanth gum, Carbomer 934 and Sodium CMC, and also chitosan.…”

“…Water-sensitive paper was used to obtain a clear pattern down to the size distribution of the spray droplets. The nozzle used was an ordinal spray nozzle [ 22 ]. The diameter of the fixed pattern was then measured to determine the spray angle.…”

“…However, the use of acids to dilute chitosan can produce distinctive aromas that are uncomfortable and can irritate wound mucosal tissue [ 21 ]. The application of hydrogel preparations also allows cross-infection, nonuniform dosage, and uneven drug distribution [ 22 ]. Therefore, we developed a film-forming spray using water-soluble chitosan containing hEGF-liposomes as a potential preparation for wound healing.…”
