<p>Emerging roles of circular RNAs in colorectal cancer</p>

Abstract: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a newly discovered class of endogenous non-coding RNAs. Owing to the development of high-throughput sequencing, researchers have identified thousands of circRNAs. Emerging evidence suggests that circRNAs are involved in various tumor cell processes, including proliferation, apoptosis, invasion and migration. Because of their high stability and abundance, tissue-specific expression, and easy detection, circRNAs are considered ideal biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and prognosis. An i… Show more

“…Due to their special circular structure, circRNAs have high stability and great potential as new tumour markers [21]. Recent studies have found that circRNAs are involved in the development and progression of various cancers [22][23][24], such as gastric cancer, breast cancer, and colorectal cancer. Current evidence suggests that circRNAs can target miRNAs, often referred to as "miRNA sponges, " to reduce the levels of miRNAs and release their targeted inhibition of mRNAs, thereby regulating the expression of protein-coding genes [25][26][27].…”

“…Interestingly, using primary cultures of human smooth muscle cells and macrophages as a model of atherogenesis, the authors demonstrated that impaired ribosome biogenesis and nucleolar stress-induction due to high levels of circANRIL, confers a protective response against atherosclerosis [117]. This mechanism of regulation of ribosome biogenesis through circular lncRNA provides exciting opportunities for investigating ribosome biogenesis in a different yet complementary context to its implication in the regulation of translation in CRC [118].…”

“…Despite many advances achieved in diagnosis and therapy, the prognosis of CRC patients remains unsatisfactory due to the advanced stage at first diagnosis and the high frequency of metastasis and recurrence (2). Statistics from well-known sources have reported that the 5-year survival rates for CRC patients with early-stage disease was 90%, and the survival rate was only 13.1% for those diagnosed with late-stage CRC (3,4). Therefore, to raise the efficiency of tumor diagnosis and improve the prognosis of CRC patients, new sensitive and cost-effective biomarkers are urgently required.…”
