Effect of Intracorporeal Human Adipose–Derived Stem Cells (hADSCs) on Corpora Cavernosa Transforming Growth Factor β1 (TGFβ1) and Collagen Type I Concentration in Wistar Rat Priapism Model

Abstract: Introduction: The ischemic process in priapism can lead to displacement of normal tissue with fibrotic tissue, due to collagen deposition, and eventually leads to erectile dysfunction. Many studies have identified that the supernatant of adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs) significantly ameliorates fibrosis of different tissue, but limited attention has been paid to its efficacy on fibrosis of the corpora cavernosa. Methods: A total of 22 Wistar rats divided into five groups, with two groups each consist… Show more

“…In recent years, anti-fibrotic mechanisms of ADSCs have been progressively elucidated [18,19]. TGF-β is one of the most classical and important signaling pathway in fibrosis pathogenesis, and its up-regulation activates hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) expression, and the synthesis of ECM proteins, such as collagens [20].…”

“…With regard to improving erectile function in ED rats with metabolic syndrome, penile cavernous fibrosis progresses in vascular-derived ED. In addition, the expression of transforming growth factor-β 1 (TGF-β1), a molecular marker of fibrosis in fractionated vascular ED, induces damaged-tissue repair by aggregating fibroblasts in areas of ischemic-tissue damage and promoting the production of collagenous connective tissue [ 88 ]. In the study by Kim et al [ 52 ], the proportion of penile smooth muscle cells in rats suffering from metabolic syndrome was significantly reduced, whereas that with RG treatment was close to that of normal controls and inhibited TGF-β1 expression in the penile corpus cavernosum (Fig.…”

“…However, in our study, no animal exhibited such an advance neoplastic disease, and the decrease in BW might be associated with DMH proinflammatory effects. Priapism is a pathological condition characterized by a prolonged erection (about four hours or more), which is usually painful and is not due to any sexual stimulation [ 30 , 31 ]. Neurological and metabolic diseases, as well as the excessive use of drugs, have been associated with this condition [ 30 ].…”
