Difficulties In Emotion Regulation During Rehabilitation For Alcohol Addiction: Correlations With Metacognitive Beliefs About Alcohol Use And Relapse Risk

Abstract: PurposeUnderstanding how difficulties in emotion regulation can be related to metacognitive beliefs during early abstinence, identifying which factors are associated with craving and relapse risk may be useful in residential rehabilitation treatment of alcohol addiction.MethodsSixty-five patients underwent a 28-day rehabilitation program for alcohol addiction. They underwent a brief semi-structured interview at admission and completed a battery of five self-report questionnaires between days 7 and 10 of alcoho… Show more

“…Negative emotion of depression and anxiety conducted mediating variables between emotional regulation and Interent addiction. On the one hand, similar to previous research, negative emotion was the partial mediating factor between cognitive reappraisal and Interent addiction (57)(58)(59). Negative emotion are important mechanisms in the relationship between emotional regulation and Interent addiction.…”

“…CBT, particularly involving emotion regulation strategies, were useful to decrease distress intolerance (McHugh et al, 2014) and to teach individuals with problematic alcohol use to regulate their craving and negative affect effectively (Suzuki et al, 2020). Changing negative affect by combining medication and behavioural interventions, as well as a rehabilitation treatment program (combining medical, nursing, and CBT interventions), were found to be effective in reducing problematic alcohol use (Witkiewitz, Bowen, & Donovan, 2011) and emotional (psychological distress), metacognitive (alcohol‐related metacognitions) and cognitive (alcohol craving) factors in alcohol users during the abstinence phase (Ottonello, Fiabane, Pistarini, Spigno, & Torselli, 2019). Accordingly, future studies could focus on the effects of CBT, MCT, and SIDI and combined treatments on negative affect, alcohol‐related metacognitions, distress intolerance, craving, and problematic alcohol use in alcohol users in the abstinence and active phases.…”

“…Nevertheless, the specific relationship between psychological distress and emotional dysregulation has been little investigated in literature. Psychological distress was shown to correlate with all DERS dimensions, save for Awareness, in a sample of university students of medium proportions ( 46 ) and with the Strategies, Impulse, and Clarity subscales in a small sample of patients with alcohol use disorder ( 47 ). Nevertheless, these data are not fully comparable with ours, since despite using the DERS, both these studies differed in the instrument used to assess psychological distress and none used the K10.…”
