Altered circulating levels of adipokine omentin-1 in patients with prostate cancer

Abstract: Background: Prostate cancer (PCa), one of the most common cancers in men, accounts for nearly 20% of adult malignant neoplasms. Omentin-1 is synthesized in visceral adipose tissue and its concentration in plasma changes with cancers. However, the association between omentin-1 and PCa was rarely studied. Thus, we investigated the plasma omentin-1 levels in PCa patients in Chinese population. Materials and methods: Ninety cases of PCa and 90 matched healthy controls were enroll… Show more

“…Our findings revealed that serum concentrations of omentin were significantly higher in PC subjects than in men with prostate hypertrophy and this phenomenon was independent of BMI and metabolic syndrome. We did not observe any relationships between the Gleason score and omentin levels and this observation correlates with previous findings [14,15]. Additionally, we demonstrated positive correlations between omentin and leptin.…”

“…Higher concentrations of omentin were also reported in mesothelioma [21], in gastric cancer [11], and pancreatic cancer [22] and in most of those studies, increased omentin levels were independent of BMI, glucose, and lipid parameters. Increased concentrations of omentin in PC cases were described previously by Zhou et al [14] and in the Turkey population by Uyeturk et al [15]. Higher levels of serum omentin in PC were also observed in the Polish patients [16].…”

“…The interest in the role of ITLN in cancer has been driven by the observation that ITLN1 levels differ between healthy individuals and patients with various types of cancer (7)(8)(9)(10). We recently identified ITLN1 and ITLN2 mRNA as increased in the visceral adipose tissue of gastrointestinal cancer patients and found that local but not circulating ITLN1 protein demonstrated a relationship with cancer cachexia (11).…”

“…In pancreatic cancer, on the other hand, serum omentin levels were found to be significantly higher in patients compared to healthy controls and have been demonstrated to have a potential diagnostic significance [ 46 ]. Similarly, omentin overexpression was observed in prostate cancer [ 47 ] while it was significantly downregulated in renal cancer patients [ 48 ]. Furthermore, in CRC, omentin plasma levels were found to be positively associated with CRC risk in patients with BMI (body mass index) < 30 whereas, in patients with BMI ≥ 30, it did not show any correlation [ 49 ].…”
