“…This paucity of vertebrate consumption is consistent with other studies that relied on macroscopic analyses of open-habitat chimpanzee faecal specimens (Suzuki, 1966;McGrew, 1983;Pruetz, 2006;Yoshikawa and Ogawa, 2015), but contrasts with recent observations at Issa. A 2015 report of blue duiker consumption at Issa (Ramirez-Amaya et al, 2015) and two additional observations since then (Piel and Stewart, unpublished data) support earlier discussions on the limitations of using indirect methods to reveal chimpanzee meat-eating (Boesch and Boesch, 1989).…”

“…Entamoeba histolytica has been found in colobus monkeys (Gillespie et al ., 2005) and in non-primate mammals, such as dogs (Alam et al ., 2015); therefore, transmission could occur through consumption of cysts from infected animals. Reports show that the Issa Valley chimpanzees consume blue duiker ( Philantomba monticola ) meat, but not red colobus monkeys or bushpigs, even though they are both present in the habitat (Ramirez-Amaya et al ., 2015). This further supports the possibility that the Gombe chimpanzees become infected by ingesting cysts from the colonic content of their prey.…”

“…Wild chimpanzees regularly catch and eat mammals and, more rarely, birds throughout sites in Africa (e.g., Goodall 1986;Boesch & Boesch 1989;Kuroda et al 1996;Hosaka et al 2001;Newton-Fisher et al 2002;Watts & Mitani 2002;Pruetz & Bertolani 2007;Fujimoto & Shimada 2008;Nakamura & Itoh 2008;Ramirez-Amaya et al 2015). While there are reports of chimpanzees capturing and interacting physically with other animals without eating them, often involving adolescent or immature chimpanzees, such interactions appear to be rare in the wild (e.g., Hirata et al 2001;Carvalho et al 2010;Hockings et al 2012).…”
