<i>Syphacia </i>(<i>Syphacia</i>) <i>maxomyos</i> sp. n. (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) from <i>Maxomys</i> spp. (Rodentia: Muridae) from Sulawesi and Sumatra, Indonesia

Abstract: The present report describes Syphacia (Syphacia) maxomyos sp. n. (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) from two species of spiny rats, Maxomys musschenbroekii from Sulawesi and M. whiteheadi from Sumatra. It is characterized by a cephalic plate extending laterally with dorsoventral constriction and stumpy eggs with an operculum rim reaching pole. It is readily distinguishable by the former feature from all of hitherto known representatives of this genus in Indonesia, but it resembles parasites in Murini and Hydromyni rodents … Show more

“…The sequence obtained from the spacer regions of OQ874775 showed three mutations at the ITS2, whereas ITS1 as well 5.8S were identical to sequences from S. obvelata deposited in NCBI GenBank. It has been well documented that Syphacia species demonstrate co-evolution with their hosts and host specificity (Hugot, 1988(Hugot, , 1999Adamson, 1989;Dewi et al, 2014;Garcia et al, 2018). So far, all isolates of S. obvelata for which sequences are available in NCBI GenBank were from Mus musculus.…”

“…Pinworm infection is routinely reported in various rodent housing facilities even under strict bio-exclusion http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/1678-4162-13135 procedures Meade and Watson, 2014). Parasitic infection occurs through the fecal-oral route (Effler et al, 2008). Although pinworms are generally nonpathogenic (Abdel-Gaber et al, 2018), and the resulting clinical signs are rare unless there are heavy loads of infection in immunocompetent animals (Chawla et al, 2015), pinworms may have deleterious effects on several research implications (Agersborg et al, 2001).…”

“…The nematode genus Syphacia Seurat, 1916 includes more than 67 parasite species of rodents (Dewi and Hasegawa 2014;Dewi et al 2014aDewi et al , 2014bDewi et al , 2015Robles et al 2014); this genus was divided into three subgenera by Hugot (1988), two distributed in North and South America, Asia, Australia and Europe (Seuratoxyuris Hugot, 1988 andSyphacia Seurat, 1916) and one (Cricetoxyuris Hugot, 1988) in Africa.…”
