Allium ulleungense (Amaryllidaceae), a new species endemic to Ulleungdo Island, Korea

Abstract: Allium ulleungense (subg. Anguinum, Amaryllidaceae), from Ulleungdo Island, Korea, is described as a new species. It is clearly distinguished from its close relatives, A. microdictyon and A. ochotense, by its broader leaves and larger whitish perianth and by its diploid chromosome number, which is 2n = 2x = 16. The lengths of the chromosomes range from 11.3 to 15.75 µm. Molecular phylogenetic analyses using nuclear and chloroplast markers also clearly indicate that A. ulleungense is genetically distinct from o… Show more

“…Zone IV unifies the historical floristic zones of the southern coast, Jejudo Island, and Ulleungdo Island, which have previously been more finely divided (Appendix ), and has a high relative abundance of Orchidaceae, Asteraceae, and Rosaceae as well as specific taxa that only appear in this zone. Although Zone IV includes some inland areas, it mostly consists of regions along the coast of the Korean Peninsula and islands that are important for biodiversity, such as the oceanic island Ulleungdo (Chang & Gil, 2014; Choi, Yang, Yang, & Friesen, 2019; Holman et al., 2017) and the volcanic island Jejudo, which contains Hallasan Mountain (1,950 m). This zone ranges from the temperate zone of evergreen broad‐leaf trees (e.g., Castanopsis sieboldii ) to the cool zone of polar trees (e.g., Diapensia lapponica var.…”

“…Recently, the number of species within the genus is estimated at 920 (Seregin et al, 2015). In Korea, 20 species are recognized, of which five species are endemic to the country (Choi and Oh, 2011;Choi et al, 2019;Korea National Arboretum, 2020;Jang et al, 2021).…”

“…In addition, the new Korean name 'Geuk-dong-san-ma-neul (극동산마늘)' is given for A. ochotense Prokh. based on the name of the region, far eastern Asia, where the species is distributed (Herden et al, 2016;Choi et al, 2019). Authorities of all the scientific names below were provided in Korea National Arboretum (2020) and Jang et al (2021).…”
