The Neonatal Integrative Developmental Care Model (NIDCM) is a holistic model of premature infant care that refers to the seven neuroprotective developmental care cores involving the family. This study aimed to assess the effect of the application of NIDCM on mothers’ stress response and length of stay in the neonatal care unit. This study used quasi-experimental with nonequivalent control group pre and posttest design. This study was carried out in the neonatal care unit at RSUP Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo Makassar from January 2020 to April 2021. The samples were 76 subjects consisting of 38 premature infants (19 controls, 19 interventions) and 38 mothers (19 controls, 19 interventions) ethical clearance by the Health Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Hasanuddin No. 938/UN4.6.4.5.51/PP36/2009. The results show 1) NIDCM is proven to be able to reduce maternal stress more compared to routine Developmental Care (DC); 2) NIDCM is proven to shorten the length of stay compared to routine DC in infants with a gestational age of ≥33 weeks with BW ≥1800 grams (Median : 1900 grams), while in infants with a gestational age of <33 weeks and BW <1800 grams (Median : 1650 grams), NIDCM and routine DC are not proven to shorten the length of stay. It can be concluded that applying NIDCM reduces the stressors felt by mothers while their infants are in the neonatal room. In addition, the condition of infants with birth weights less than 1800 grams needs special attention with NIDCM intervention.

Objective: To identify the level of stress and the most stressful situations for the parents of newborns hospitalized in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Methods: A descriptive study, with a quantitative approach, performed with parents of newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. For the data collection, the Brazilian version of the Parental Stress Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (PSS: NICU) was used. The analysis was performed using descriptive statistics. Results: The change in the role of mother/father was the subscale in which the highest level of stress was obtained (mean=3.49) and the items considered more stressful in this subscale were "Separated from my baby" (mean=4.00) and "Feeling helpless and unable to protect my baby from pain and painful procedures" (mean=3.78). Conclusion: Hospitalization of a child in a neonatal unit is a stressful experience for parents and there are situations that trigger higher levels of stress.

Families of premature newborns hospitalized in intensive care tend to face fear and distress. After discharge, these families have different care needs, and some will continue to experience high levels of stress. Therefore, this study aimed to identify maternal stress levels and difficulties with at-home infant care using a parallel convergent mixed methods research design. Quantitative data were collected using the Parental Stress Scale (administered at a hospital) and the Parental Stress Index Scale (administered at a follow-up clinic) with 51 mothers of preterm infants in Brazil. Qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews with 15 mothers, randomly selected from the quantitative sample 3 to 6 months after discharge. Higher maternal stress scores and lower parenting confidence were associated with child hospitalization. However, family support helped mothers adapt to the new home care routine, empowering them to develop healthy maternal competence. Data integration showed that the sample and subsample presented similar stress levels.
