Lower Serum Irisin Levels Are Associated with Increased Vascular Calcification in Hemodialysis Patients

Abstract: Background/Aims: Vascular calcification, which involves an active cellular transformation of vascular smooth muscle cells into bone forming cells, is prevalent and predicts mortality in dialysis patients. Its mechanisms are complex and unclear. We presume that irisin, a newly identified myokine also may play roles in vascular calcification in hemodialysis patients. This study aims to evaluate serum irisin levels and establish their relation to vascular calcification and other parameters in hemodialysis patient… Show more

“…We also found that irisin serum levels were lower in post-menopausal women with PHPT compared to control subjects [19]. This finding supported results from other previous clinical investigations showing that irisin was inversely correlated with PTH in postmenopausal women with low bone mass [14] and in hemodialysis patients [47]. Moreover, our study also showed that irisin treatment decreases the expression of PTH receptor in osteoblasts, suggesting that this myokine may exert its anabolic effect on bone not only by stimulating osteoblast formation and function, but also by reducing the action of PTH on these cells [19].…”

“…Our study is the first to identify that lower serum irisin significantly correlated with VC in PD patients. Consistently, He et al [5] reported that hemodialysis patients with VC had lower serum irisin levels than patients without VC. Several mechanisms could explain our findings.…”

“…In addition, recent studies have indicated that irisin may play roles in calcium and phosphate homoeostasis and promote bone formation [4]. He et al [5] found that lower irisin concentrations were associated with VC in hemodialysis patients. However, the effect of irisin on VC in PD patients remains unclear and no relative study was reported.…”

“…Furthermore, Lee et al (31) demonstrated that serum irisin was significantly associated with carotid atherosclerosis in peritoneal dialysis patients. He et al also found that irisin was associated with increased vascular calcification in HD patients (32). Additionally, Wu et al announced that a low serum irisin level is a predictor of poor early functional outcome in ischemic stroke patients (6).…”
