Lower hybrid wave coupling and propagation in the presence of nonthermal edge electrons

Abstract: In order to improve our understanding of lower hybrid current drive experiments in high power regimes, where fast electrons ͑up to few keV͒ are generated in front of the lower hybrid ͑LH͒ grill, an analysis of LH wave coupling and propagation is carried out using a formulation of the dielectric tensor that incorporates the fast electron population (T hot Շ5 keV). It is found that both the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric tensor are modified for waves with ͉N ʈ ͉տ10, which can interact with the fast e… Show more

“…Details of the coupling are presented in the Appendix. Fast electrons do not change significantly the power content of the high-n part of the spectrum [21]. Therefore, this model should not be too restrictive.…”

“…The flux of fast electrons driven by LHCD in SOL plays a key role in generation of hot spots and the SOL currents as well as, due to the carried heat and electric charges, respectively. Some simulation tools, including the antenna-plasma coupling code, 17 particle in cell (PIC) simulation code, 18 were developed in order to calculate the fast electron flux driven by LHCD. In a theoretical study, 19 fast electron generation in a wide layer of several centimeters was investigated.…”

“…To begin, we illustrate why, based on earlier calculations [6,7], it was generally accepted that fast electrons should only be generated within a few mm of the LH grill. Time-averaged SOL plasma profiles of figure 2, determined by reciprocating Langmuir probe measurements in Tore Supra shot 39547 in magnetic flux tubes that were not connected to the LH antenna, are used as input to our calculations.…”

“…It is now well documented, both by experiment [1][2][3][4] and theory [2,[5][6][7], that high n // components of the lower hybrid (LH) grill spectrum interact with tokamak edge electrons via linear as well as non-linear Landau damping (n // = k // c/ω is the parallel refractive index defined as the ratio of the speed of light to the parallel phase velocity of a given Fourier component of the LH wave spectrum). Resonant electrons absorb LH power and spread via resonance overlap throughout the stochastic region of velocity space forming a suprathermal population as depicted in figure 1.…”
