Lower carbohydrate and higher fat intakes are associated with higher hemoglobin A1c: findings from the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey 2008–2016

Abstract: Purpose Evidence of low-carbohydrate, high-fat diets (LCHF) for type 2 diabetes (T2DM) prevention is scarce. We investigated how carbohydrate intake relates to HbA1c and T2DM prevalence in a nationally representative survey dataset. Methods We analyzed dietary information (4-day food diaries) from 3234 individuals aged ≥ 16 years, in eight waves of the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey (2008-2016). We calculated LCHF scores (0-20, higher score indicating lower %food energy from carbohydrate, with reciproca… Show more

“…Respondents who had high knowledge about www.nature.com/scientificreports/ carbohydrates, and their role in nurition and health, were more concerned about the unfavourable consequences of LCDs on micronutrient inadequacy. Foods recommended in LCDs also conflict with dietary guidelines recommendations 25 . Compared to non-LCD followers, current followers consumed less starchy foods, fruits and vegetables, but more meat, fish, and cheese, similar to a previous study 21 .…”

“…Our cross-sectional analysis in people without known diabetes in the National Diet and Nutrition Survey in the UK showed that, although few people ( n 8 or 0⋅24 % of the overall sample) met the conservative definition of LCD (<26 % energy), both lower carbohydrate intake (per 5 % energy band) and LCD pattern (according to LCD adherence score), were associated with higher HbA1c (+0⋅16 mmol/mol, P = 0⋅012, per 5 % energy decrease in carbohydrate; +0⋅10 mmol/mol, P = 0⋅001, per 2-point increase in LCD adherence score) (138) . The National Diet and Nutrition Survey used food diaries for the estimation of dietary intakes, which are more accurate and less reliant on memories compared to the FFQ.…”

“…Furthermore, our finding may also be explained by the reduced fat consumption by individuals in Stroke Coach compared to Memory Training, considering evidence of an association between fat consumption and HbA1c. 32…”
