Low-velocity and ballistic impact resistances of particle reinforced metal–matrix composites: An experimental study

Abstract: This study investigates the low-velocity and ballistic impact responses of SiC reinforced Al 6061 metal-matrix composites in different reinforcement volume fractions. Low-velocity impact (LVI) tests were performed with samples having SiC particle volume fractions of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40%, while ballistic tests were carried out with samples having volume fractions of 0, 10, 20, and 30%. The weight-drop test method was used for LVI by applying 50 J (4.45 m/s) energy to all samples. Ballistic tests were c… Show more

Ekici and Kosedag (Ekici et al, 2022;Kosedag et al, 2022) and Srehari (Muniraj and Sreehari, 2022) conducted ballistic tests using projectiles of different materials at different speeds, as a reference for this experiment. In order to study the high-speed and low-energy impact of micro particle inhalers and make the results universal, a steel ball of 2 mm diameter was chose in this experiment.…”

“…1,2 Another important application of foam core sandwich panels is energy absorption at different stress levels and novel practical measures have been taken to enhance this property in the literature. 36 Analyzing the impact energy absorption of sandwich structures requires accurate modeling. However, due to the nature of the accurate simulations performed for this type of structure, which is often accomplished using numerical methods, simplifying approaches to reduce computational costs are inevitable.…”

“…It is used as one of the abrasive materials due to its high hardness feature. 12,13 Selection criteria are majorly satisfied by low density (3.10-3.20 g/cm 3 ), high hardness (HV10 ≥ 22 GPa), high thermal conductivity (126 W/mK), high melting temperature (2730 C). From the stability perspective, neither salty acidic or basic solutions nor organic solutions pose a risk to silicon carbide chemically.…”
