Low-threshold stimulated emission from lysozyme amyloid fibrils doped with a blue laser dye

Abstract: Amyloid fibrils are excellent self-assembling nanotemplates for organic molecules such as dyes. Here, we demonstrate that laser dye-doped lysozyme type fibrils exhibit significantly reduced threshold for stimulated emission compared to that observed in usual matrices. Laser action was studied in slab planar waveguides of the amyloids doped with Stilbene 420 laser dye prepared using a film casting technique. The lowering of the threshold of stimulated emission is analyzed in the context of intrinsic structure o… Show more

“…For many applications, it is desirable to functionalize such structures with additional materials [24]. For example, by addition of luminescent dyes PNFs can be prepared suitable for applications related to light emission [25][26][27][28]; in addition, interesting nonlinear optical effects have been observed in dye-doped PNF systems [29]. Moreover, dye-doped PNFs may be valuable as, e.g., labeled proteins for amyloidosis studies.…”

“…The results reported herein are thus of importance for the formation of functionalized amyloid fibrils that can be used in organic electronics and photonics applications. The use of various protein structures for such applications is attracting increasing interest and development of methods to prepare fibril dispersions are thus of high importance.…”

“…WGM lasing has also been achieved in BSA microdisks . Lasing from starch microspheres and slab planar waveguides of the lysozyme amyloid fibrils were also reported. Additionally, poly(lactic‐co‐glycolic acid) (PLGA) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) (both are approved for medical use) have been employed for laser resonators.…”
