Low Temperature Thermal Annealing in Fast Neutron-Irradiated Potassium Permanganate

Abstract: The effect of thermal annealing on the retention of recoil 54 Mn as permanganate in crystalline KMn0 4 irradiated with fast neutrons at liquid nitrogen temperature has been studied. The retention after 4 hrs of annealing increases from about 8% at -196 ° to a maximum of 61% at 180 then decreases at higher temperatures. A single activation energy 0.01 eV) applies to the thermal anneajing process between -196 ° and -40Extrapolation of the data suggests that below -229 0 no thermal annealing would occur.
