Low-temperature phases in Cs2CdBr4 and Cs2HgBr4

Abstract: With respect to their phase transitions, Cs2CdBr4 and Cs2HgBr4 are the first known representatives of a new group having the fl-K2SO4-type structure. Upon coolmg they show the following phase sequence. Phase around the a axis by 7 °. In P1 there is also a slight distortion of the structure.

Apart from these systematic differences, the variations in the distances in ZnBr 4 tetrahedra are much smaller than the modulation amplitudes of the Br atoms and the Zn atoms have small modulation amplitudes.…”

“…In both compounds the phase transformations are described by a rotation wave through YBr4 tetrahedra, which changes the environment of the Cs atoms (Altermatt et al, 1984;Speziali & Chapuis, 1989). The cavities around the two Cs positions have different sizes, as can be seen by the large difference in the Ueq values of the Cs atoms.…”

“…A projection along the a axis makes evident a pseudohexagonal aspect of the structure. In the RT phase the existence of static disorder was excluded by the unique NQR signal (Altermatt et al, 1984). Between 252 and 237 K weak satellite reflections were observed and this phase (INC) could be well described as incommensurate in the Pnma(iss) space group (Speziali & Chapuis, 1989).…”

“…In addition, they detected a linear decrease of the q value from 0-15 to 0.20 with decreasing temperature. The superspace group of the INC phase discussed by other authors seemed to be controversial (Maeda et al, 1983;Altermatt et al, 1984).…”
