Low Temperature Performance and Durability of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells with Titanate Based Fuel Electrodes Using Reformate Fuel

Abstract: The Ni/YSZ composite electrode is conventionally used for solid oxide cells, in electrolysis (SOEC) as well as fuel cell (SOFC) operation. For enhanced electrochemical performance at low temperature, mechanical durability, and impurity tolerance, alternative fuel electrode materials and cell configurations are required. In this paper we have studied a metal supported cell (MSC) with a titanate-based fuel electrode (La0.4Sr0.4Fe0.03Ni0.03Ti0.94O3, LSFNT) for its fuel cell performance using carbon containing fue… Show more

“…Thus, there seems to be an overlap of two processes related to 50 Hz occurring at two electrodes, which makes interpretations very challenging. Observations regarding effect of gas changes are agreeing with results by Christensen et al, 16 Hagen et al, 14 and Hagen et al 8 for the steam/hydrogen gas compositions on similar types of MSCs. Sometimes, a process at frequencies <1 Hz is observed.…”

“…1000 Hz. They were observed in previous studies as well (e.g., 8,16 ) and can be ascribed mass transport (low frequency) and the triple phase boundary reaction (high frequency) at the Ni/YSZ fuel electrode. Higher steam content (increase from 4 to 20%) decreases the respective resistances (see circles and triangles in Fig.…”

“…Due to the limited availability of the specific cells, the test was continued. The ASR values of the better MSC is in the same range as obtained on similar cells (though slightly different conditions) in EC ( 6) and FC mode (12,13). Figure 3 shows the initial EIS of the cells.…”

“…Figure 3 shows the iV curves in hydrogen fuel at low temperatures in comparison to SoA cells with Ni/YSZ anodes (from ref. (3)). The MSC with the allceramic anode shows the best performance under those conditions, demonstrating the potential of these cells.…”
