The dynamic response of pin-clamped composite sandwich beam in terms of face-sheet effect with polyvinylchloride foam core subjected to bending impact loading was investigated in this paper. Composite sandwich beams with three different unidirectional skin layups of [0]4, [45]4 and [90]4 and two types of face-sheet thickness of 1 ([0]4) and 2 ([0]8) mm were fabricated. An explicit code, VUMAT, is written and implemented in ABAQUS/Explicit. The micro-computerised tomography scanning was used to detect adhesive layer failure. The ply angle orientation of face sheets plays an important role in the failure mechanism of the sandwich beam under bending loads. Although it is known that the fibre angle in the direction perpendicular to the bending direction is more stiff and strength, damage tolerances under bending impact loads of beams with other fibre angles were determined. In addition, as the number of layers increased, failure mechanism and load-carrying capacity of composite face sheets changed completely for increasing bending stiffness. This research provides fundamental information about the change of the failure mechanisms as the fibre angle and thickness of the face sheet were changed and in terms of interpretation with the help of finite elements using different failure criteria.

Composite marine structures are crucial for maritime and aerospace applications due to their strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. To ensure their reliability and durability, a methodology to predict the damage criticality and service life of composite marine T-joints is essential. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has emerged as a powerful tool for preliminary design and structural evaluation of complex structures, reducing the need for extensive experimental work and leading to substantial cost savings. This research project aims to conduct a comprehensive FEA of composite T-joints, considering alternative skin, core, and infill materials. Structural analyses under various loading conditions will evaluate overall deflection and stress levels, aiming to enhance the design and reliability of composite marine constructions, ultimately improving their performance and extending their service life in demanding maritime and aerospace environments.

Low‐velocity impact performance of notched glass fiber reinforced plastic composites repaired by bonding external composite patches was investigated by experimental and numerical methods. Various patches of different fiber materials such as carbon and glass fiber and thickness were considered under different impact energy levels. The continuum damage mechanics based on a dynamic progressive damage model was using to build the finite element model and cohesive elements were used between the composite patch and notched composite plate. Five different failure criteria based on three‐dimensional Hashin damage models were implemented by the explicit finite element subroutine ABAQUS‐VUMAT with degradation model and used to compare experimental damage areas. The experimental contact force, kinetic energy histories, and experimental damage areas were calculated and compared the numerical ones. While the experimental data confirm the efficiency of the proposed model, they show consistent results with the numerical model. Finally, using the composite patch is succeeded to avoid impact damage. This research provides fundamental support for the appropriate selection of external composite patch type and use of the degradation model with different failure model to achieve high‐efficiency simulation under impact loading.
