Low Sexual Desire — Is it All in Her Head? Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder

Abstract: Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) is thought to be the most prevalent form of female sexual dysfunction (FSD), affecting up to 1 in 10 US women. “…46 These findings may be explained by the negative impact of mood disturbance on brain centers associated with sexual drive, arousal, and pleasure. 47 Further, antidepressant medications also used to treat anxiety symptoms can limit sexual desire, sensation, and ability to achieve and maintain orgasm. 48, 49 Given the low antidepressant medication usage rates in the current study and consequent inability to reliably determine the potential effects of these agents on FSD in women with migraine, future studies focused on this aim are warranted.…”

“…Although the underlying pathophysiology is not completely understood, functional Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies reveal persistent changes in brain activation and deactivation patterns in women with HSDD, compared with women with no history of HSDD. [11][12][13] Thus, treatment options that include pharmacotherapy to correct or counteract these alterations in brain function are likely to be effective in treating HSDD or able to serve in a combined pharmacological and psychological approach. Currently, there are no approved pharmacotherapies for HSDD in the USA.…”
